Charity Gala Evening, 11 June 2009

In aid of the National Osteoporosis Society

In 2009, the Charity Gala Evening, in support of the National Osteoporosis Society, will take place on Thursday 11 June, the first public open night of the Fair. The National Osteoporosis Society is the only UK-wide charity dedicated to improving the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of this fragile bone disease to reduce the incidence of disabling and painful fractures. In the United Kingdom, one in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 will break a bone, mainly because of osteoporosis.

The National Osteoporosis Society leads the fight against the disease in the UK by providing information, raising awareness, funding research, providing support and working in partnership with policy-makers and healthcare professionals to strengthen the care available for those who break bones or are at risk of breaking bones.

The Gala will start with a Private View and champagne reception within the Fair from 7pm to 9pm. Guests can stroll round the Fair and take in the magnificent array of antiques and works of art. The Private View will be followed by Dinner and entertainment in the Ballroom from 9.00pm.

The Gala Evening is always a spectacular event and in 2008, around £1million was raised for the International Fundraising Committee of the British Red Cross. Each year many celebrities, keen to support the chosen charity, attend. In past years, celebrities have included Annie Lennox, Elizabeth Hurley, Cherie Blair, Liza Minnelli, Sir Bob Geldof, Elle Macpherson, Ivana Trump, Jemima Khan, Ruby Wax and David Furnish. Past Charity Gala beneficiaries have also included Coram, CLIC Sargent, the NSPCC and KIDS.
